Legal/Custody Testing

Substance (Drug and Alcohol) Testing for Parenting Arrangements

Overview

Contentious parenting arrangement cases (still commonly referred to as child custody cases) are not uncommon and accusations may be made by either party that the other is engaging in behaviour deemed to be potentially harmful to the shared children.

Such accusations may allege inappropriate substance use (drugs and/or alcohol) and may or may not have any merit.

Often the anticipated outcome of such accusations is that the accusing parent may appear more suitable as the primary (and/or custodial) parent.

Depending on the accusations or circumstances specific to the situation, Drug and Alcohol Testing can be employed by either or both parties to satisfy the requirements imposed though court, through counselling or mediation or by joint agreement.

Substance Testing may also be appropriate in other situations such as those relating to non-custodial childcare, foster care, care of dependent adults and elder care.

TESTING FREQUENCY

Drug and Alcohol Testing can be facilitated as a single occurrence or can form the basis of an ongoing testing plan with a frequency to meet the needs of the affected parties.

REFERRALS

Referrals for testing may come from lawyers, mediators, counsellors, court order, probation officers, social workers and/or the affected individuals themselves.

There are benefits and limitations to different types of tests so tests appropriate to your circumstances can be chosen.
